JUST JACK

Just Jack

If you can live without caffeine,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, though no fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him / her,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against race colour or creed,
THEN, you have ALMOST reached the same level of development as your dog.

HANDSOME LAD

 He's small, he's cute, he's funny, and he's my dog ...

Jack is a Toy Yorkshire Terrier, he's about 6.5 inches high at the shoulder and about 12 inches long from nose to tail and he weighs 2.5 kgs.

I realised a few weeks ago that Jack is the image of a stuffed toy dog I had when I was a toddler.
In those days our toys were stuffed with some kind of straw believe it or not!  I had chewed the foot of my toy dog and the straw was poking out, so it was a bit unhygienic and dangerous so my Dad threw it in the bin and thought I wouldn't notice.

I screamed and screamed and searched the house looking for

GIMME DA BALL !

my dog, to no avail.  I can still remember it to this day and I must have been barely able to walk at the time, because my parents look really huge to me in this memory and I know I had the toy as a toddler.

I eventually found my precious toy dog in the dustbin in the yard and I was FURIOUS with my parents for throwing him in the bin!  I found it really hard to forgive them for that and I grieved for that toy dog like you wouldn't believe!

I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

When I had children of my own my mother used to ask me if I remembered what a particular word was that I used to repeat over and over as a toddler.  She said I used to wander around asking "Where's my Degneywegy?"
 I WUB YU !
I laughed at the fact that she hadn't worked out that what I was saying was "Where's my Doggywoggy?"  In those days baby talk was OK!  It still is as far as I'm concerned.  Helps kids to remember words.

And I find it really amazing that here I am today, with a REAL Toy Dog who looks just like the TOY Toy Dog that I grieved for all those years ago.  Now I'm like a child again with my 'real toy'!

Jack was 18 months old when I got him in July 2007, and he'd just sired 2 beautiful pups to a lovely Dam called Mollie.

He was already named Jack when I got him but if I was to name him myself I'd have called him Guinness!

He has a dark body with a froth of creamy hair on the top of his head and he reminds me of a Pint of Guinness!

HIYA !

He has a wonderful temperament, never gets bad tempered or nasty, doesn't nip or bite, he loves to be cuddled, stroked, brushed, petted and to sit on my lap.

When he's had enough of that ...
he turns into ...

JACK THE JUMPING GYMNAST DOG!

He finds his bouncy ball, finally fetches it to me and looks longingly at the front door.  If I ignore him, he will go to the front door and nod his head at it to tell me it's time we went for a walk in the park for a game of Fetch.  If that doesn't work, he turns round and round until he's dizzy with excitement all the time holding the ball in his mouth.  Well who could ignore that signal?

The game used to mean that I threw the ball, he ran to it and collected it and then ran away and dropped it elsewhere for ME to go and fetch and bring back to HIM.

I did that for a while but eventually said "No, no Jack, it's about YOU learning to find the ball and bring it back to ME so I can throw it away again."

But Jack had other ideas for quite some time until one day I simply refused to play the game his way and fetch the ball.

And I was amazed.

He knew all the time that HE was supposed to fetch the ball to ME.
He looked at me with such depth as if to say "OK ... well you can't blame me for trying, but we'll play it your way from now on!"
and he collected the ball from beneath a tree and fetched it back to me without any problem.

Dogs are so clever!
 That's why I love 'em!

I KNOW YOU LOVE ME ! PLAY BOW THAT'S MINE ! WOT YOU LOOKIN' AT? TRUST MY CRUFTS POSE
IT'S MY DINNER TIME ISN'T HE A BEAUTY? I SEE YA ! MEDITATING - DO NOT DISTURB OK - YOU CAN TAKE A PIC NOW BUT ... MAKE SURE YOU GET MY BEST SIDE!
EXPLORING HIYA ! NO I WILL NOT ! DISTINGUISHED DOG MOLLIE - JACKS LADY FRIEND AM I CUTE OR WOT ?

When Jack and I go to the park, I marvel at the way his tiny tootsies barely touch the ground as he bounds across the field.  He doesn't run, he sort of bounces across the grass as if he's on springs!  It's really funny to watch him.  He's so small and light that he's in the air most of the time when he's 'running.'

But just because he's a small, cute dog with a warm temperament don't think he's a pampered pooch who doesn't know how to be a dog.

If Jack was behind a closed door and you couldn't see him, but you heard him growl, you would not believe it came from him.  He has a very deep, slow growl which the first time I heard, scared the living daylights out of me because I didn't realise it was coming from him.  I thought another dog had got into the house!

This dog interacts with other dogs also and he's not scared to mix with the biggest of 'em.  He has 3 German Shepherd friends called Floyd, Max and Tess.  In fact there are about 7 dogs altogether in his 'pack' over at the park and he gets on fine with every one of them.  He's neither aggressive nor passive in the way he interacts with them, he sees himself as simply one of the pack, albeit the smallest.

He gives out the strong message ...

"I'm here to be sociable, friendly, to play and have fun but if you have other ideas and use YOUR size and your power to intimidate or hurt me ... be careful ... 'cos I'll use MINE in exactly the same way ... and I'll run rings round you.  Believe me YOU will get tired before I do!"

Where character is concerned ...

he's a Champ!

I admire the owner of the dog in this video greatly!
